His service dog had saddle bags as acted as his hands. He still got constantly hassled by cops because they refused to believe that was a Thing. Also, a lot of people have invisible disabilities. Just because you can't see someone has a serious seizure disorder for example, doesn't mean they don't need the dog.

Invisible disabilities are still disabilities. The Brain is an Organ. Don't be a dick!

* Yesterday was incredibly frustrating with lots of reboots and general computer fuckery and me having to constantly get up to solve problems around the apartment. I did finally achieve stability and was getting real work done, when Tavy ran over and flopped onto the keyboard before I could stop him, turning it off. I extracted him from the lap top and went off to try to salvage a light bulb from a dead fish light in hopes the light was dead for electricals and the bulb was good (fish grow lights are very expensive), as one of the bulbs went out on the twenty that both twenty tanks are now sharing. I usually get the fish store guys to do the big lights as it's tools and tiny fiddly bits that my hands can't really do properly anymore. Extracting the bulb from the dead light was reasonably easy as I own screwdrivers, and I trapped all the small parts in the body of the light just in case. I start to take the second light apart and the fixture flew apart when I loosened the second screw with an alarming ting. Like all of it came apart and not just the bit I wanted, because of course. I can't examine the assembled fixture properly as doing so might endanger a light I knew worked and couldn't afford to loose. I did manage to proof of concept well enough to prove the bulb was still good, but I could not for the life of me get it to match and the thing wasn't stable. Then I realized... missing part. no sign of the thing anywhere. I take the equivalent missing bit from the dead light, construct a prop, start to put it together, discover the screw driver also missing. Because of course. Also, Tavy keeps trying to help. because small loose fiddly bits are his favorite toys. I finger tighten and figure I'll improvise with scissors as they are closer to the right size for the philips head later. I get it assembled and test. Light works as is so bright and beautiful. (Yes, you are supposed to replace both bulbs at once, but unless you are buying me a big ass aquabulb, don't complain.) I take the sofa apart and find the screw driver, tighten, secure and close. It took an hour and a half what with all the help and missing things. The missing piece turned out to be literally under the light, which I discover when I put it back. Fun. next on the list it seeing if I can get one working light out of the 30 light Tavy toasted and a dead supplemental. These, of course are a different shape bulb with different fixtures. Sigh. Not tonight.

* So it turns out that if you email Tom's of Maine to ask them specific questions about their toothpaste, they call you up and talk to you about toothpaste preferences, and they mail you a free full sized tube to try!

I adored Tom's of Maine as they made non-mint flavours, but I was warned off by my Dentist in the mid-90's because of my genetically fragile teeth. (Not a problem for normal people, and said friend says their toothpaste is smooth instead of gritty, so they may have entirely changed formulations in the intervening two decades.) I was advising a friend recently and discovered they'd dramatically expanded their product line and contacted them on the off. I'll test out the taste and texture and see how it goes, since I'd love to be able to switch back. I hate Colgate and Sensadyne flavourwise, and I react badly to peppermint because of my sensory difference. (Spearmint and Wintergreen are fine, but most other mints not so much).

I admit to hoping they might send me a small travel sized tube for testing, I was not expecting a full sized one. Good on you Tom's of Maine. I adore your deodorant, and your mouthwash is entirely inoffensive and does not send me into sensory overload. I am so hoping the propolis and myrrh is safe and pleasant. I'm not a fan of myrrh as a scent, but I admit to curiousity. My hope is if the texture is right and the flavour wrong, I might try the children's flavours. Anyway, fingers crossed.

In other mint news, they had discontinued my tummy tea, hence my inability to find it since I started looking 'round the turn of the year. I was forced to search out a new brand with May's food allotment. I tested it on a queasiness mid-month, and turns out that Numi Moroccan Mint is "sweet spearmint" like as promised, richly flavoured and inoffensive, butter tasting than the old brand.

* There was a last minute bidding flurry, for which I am grateful, but the most valuable thing on there went for about half of what it would have made if I'd waited until Fall. Sigh. The bill I floated last month got paid this afternoon out of my government money. I can for sure pay the bill coming due end of next week. I am suspecting I haven't enough for 2nd bill when it hits mid month, but I won't know how short I am until we get there. Clearly I am not getting paper towels this month as I'd hoped and I may have to do another auction. Which means picking sacrifices. Worse, I may do an imp lot which is waaaaay harder without Main computer's database, but the immediate emergency is solved.

* Things needed doing, so I masked up and dragged myself out to do them, despite getting out of breath on the walk to the bathroom. I needed to do a small thing for a neighborhood friend and go to the Doctor (of course), but also we were running out of key food items which meant forage and a grocery store not in my neighborhood.

Something happened at forage that I wanted to mention, particularly as a reminder to able bodied people. DO NOT GRAB SOMEONE'S CRUTCH or other mobility device away from them. Yes, even if you think you are helping. Look, I know she thought she was helping, but she really, really wasn't. The carts there have an open work design, that means I can't just toss the crutch into the basket and have it stay there, so I have this plastic flat that once held plant starts that I put on the lower racks, and I slide the crutch through the top slots, with the flat holding the bottom of the crutch to keep it falling through the grate. It frees up my hands, keeps the crutch out of everyone's way, and I can use the cart as a walker but still have the crutch for when I need it. Only, the flat got knocked askew, so I'm bent over coughing, trying to resettle the flat and the crutch on the bottom rack. I just get everything reseated and ready to go when the wel meaning white lady yanks the crutch from my hands and out of it's slot, knocking the rack out of place and endangering my balance, meaning I had to retrieve my crutch from her and bend over again to readjust the rack and make sure everything is properly put back together. It would have been half the time and half the coughing if she'd just LEFT THE CRUTCH ALONE. She thought she was helping, but she undid my work because she assumed incorrectly the point of the exercise, and it didn't occur to her to ask first. Look, it's rude anyway, as that is essentially a body part, even though it's detached, but the point I'm making here, is you can't read my mind. You see me doing something, it may or may not be what you think I'm doing. I've been dealing with my spinal damage a loooong time. I know the safest way to alight from a bus and how to shop with an inconvenient basket design. I literally brought a plastic plant flat in from my car to put in my cart because I knew in advance I would need one.

I am absolutely not saying you shouldn't ask if I need help carrying something or whatever, because I often really do need that sort of help, but the magic word here is ASK. Consent is magic. "Would you like a hand with that?" is polite. Grabbing my crutch isn't. Yes, even if you really do mean well.

In other adventures in disability, I was behind a nice Ukrainian couple in line. He was mostly collecting the food, going back and forth with her to consult, while she mostly managed the children. The boy was five or six and I'd guess the girl was maybe four. she needed a lot more monitoring , and was tired, I think. Th boy was quiet and well behaved, and so they were mostly just corralling him in when he started to drift out of orbit without really paying attention to him. He was staring at me wide eyed and silent. Look, I'm a middle aged, goth with long hair, ambiguous gender presentation, a crutch, and a surgical mask, gasping like a fish out of water because I am having to shuffle around with an infection because milk and bread do not spontaneously generate. I get it, I really do. The stares are significantly less flattering than the ones I got back when I was a high goth androgyny with a tiger striped Mohawk, but people have been staring at me for one reason or another since I was twelve and I am used to it. If it had been an adult gaping at me like that, I likely would have been shirty, but I have a policy with small children where I give a sound bite explanation of whatever is causing the curiosity/distress/whatever, because I can remember being three and wondering why the guy on the bus had a constellation drawn on his face and I feel like it's more normalizing to explain a disability to a small child than to let it be an object of unspeakable taboo curiosity. This kid was too old to shout loud qquestions, but too young to dissemble interest, which says teachable moment to me. I figure better I explain to some little kid that some people have spinal damage you can't see and need help walking than have them assume walking is all or nothing with disability; or as in this case that some people have sick lungs and need a mask to protect themselves and others. I don't have a lot of feelings to hurt and other people might, and this way next time the little guy sees someone with a mask, he'll likely think 'oh, someone with lung trouble' and not stare. I do not think the parents noticed. She was fussing with the little girl and he was getting bread,

Apparently the other antibiotic was good for lung infections, but not sinus ones, hence me seeming to improve and then reversing on it. I just started yet another antibiotic.

* The sleep attempt failed, as every time I started to drift off to sleep, it was like sand was filling my lungs. I managed to score an emergency Doctor appointment. they nearly forced me to go to the emergency room instead, but I pointed out that's an 8-12 hour wait on a Saturday with me coughing in the waiting room with no access to treatment, which would not be pleasant for anybody. They ended up adding a couple more meds, one of which I am allergic to, but she thinks we can get away with four days at a low dose. (Not anaphalactic, but the last time I took it I was still a healthy athlete and was bedridden for a week, barely able to make it to the bathroom). I did manage a couple of cough interrupted hours of sleep with the new meds. They kept me all afternoon because they were worried about oxygen levels.

Poor Tavy his having a really hard time with it. He just wants to curl up on his human for a cuddle nap, but the human is making terrible sounds and was gone for hours and is not following the schedule and is clearly sick and can't lie still. It's starting to freak him out, I can tell.

* A few of you have asked recently, and I suspect others of you are curious, so here is the basic FAQ on the main things wrong with me (there are others, but these two are why I'm Federally disabled).

I have Ankylosing Spondalytis (which is an autoimmune disease similar to lupus and rheumatoid arthritis) and cystic fibrosis carrier syndrome, which means my lungs are weak, prone to damage, gradually degenerating on their own, and I catch basically everything airborne I'm exposed to. AS and CF Carrier are a bad combination as the CF carrier rules out a lot of the meds that help slow AS degeneration, and the AS means that my immune system is way more interested in eating bits of me it doesn't approve of like the cartilage in my spine than in fighting off the invaders my genetically borked lungs let in. There is a particularly brutal bronchitis going around. They are dropping like flies at area nursing homes. Like nursing home residents and AIDS patients, people like me tend to get hit hard in epidemics like this. It's normal. One day, I will catch something like this, my lungs will collapse and i will die. This is how my Mother went and her Aunt Ruth. My mother's sister with full blown CF died in college of pneumonia. Before antibiotics, people with cf carrier tended to die young of things like pneumonia, bronchitis, etc.. The antibiotic revolution let folks live a lot longer. Aunt Ruth was in her 70's. My Mother was 70. Not a bad span, but the quality of life is a lot lower. It is in the nature of it.

This infection is very serious, even by my standards, and I had MRSA in my lungs for six months that one time, but this isn't the one that will kill me.

Side Note: this is why it's Ableist to mock people for doing activism at home, not that any of my followers are likely to do such a thing, but it might help you explain it to friends. Not only is it physically painful and exhausting to me to go to things like protests and rallies in person, jeopardizing my ability to, say, feed and bath myself that week, but it also exposes me to pathogens in quantity my body flat out can't handle, and the more damage serious infections do, the more scarring on my lungs, the more undermined what passes for my immune system is, the more years I lose not only off my life span, but the more years I lose off my doesn't need a portable oxygen tank time, etc.. Rev. Barber, for example, is already a fucking hero if you are only counting the work he's done with moral Mondays. When you consider he is doing it with AS, and likely his every step is agony... yeah. I honor those of us with disabilities who go out there at greater cost and risk, but not all of us can do it. And that's just me. Consider someone who is agoraphobic or has serious anxiety or whose autism or SID make being in crowds incredibly fucking difficult. (I also happen to have SID and I really don't deal well with Strangers touching me which happens at big protests and marches). It's ablest to treat folks with extra challenges like this as lazy and mock us for choosing the sort of activism that better suits our strengths and doesn't come with a massive extra cost other people don't have to consider. We aren't slacktavists, we are people who are trying our hardest and it's a shitty thing to attack us for wanting to be able to, say walk to the toilet under our own power tomorrow, or not deal with a week of serious sensory over load when the person doing the mocking never has to make that kind of choice, and it's not like there aren't a whole host of things, like phoning Congress critters to complain that are also effective.

* Legion has a really interesting aesthetic, but if you are planning on watching it and haven't yet it includes attempted rape, suicide, and a lot of things that might be triggering around gas lighting and institutionalization. I really liked the Aubry Plaza character, which I am told is a middle aged man in the comics (which I haven't read) and they deliberately didn't change anything else about the character except age and gender, which is rather brilliant. I am not sure how I feel about the way the Institution is depicted and I am generally wary of the trope where a person is not mentally ill but institutionalized for power. I do plan to stick with it, because it's well executed and they really have gotten me interested in the mauin character and the hell is going on.

* I wish there was some sort of simple way to tell whether one is tired or hungry.

* I went to get lung medicine today and as I pulled in, I saw the inevitable able bodied people blocking handicapped parking for a conversation, and was grumpily bracing to have to idle, burning gas and wasting time until they were done, as this is what usually happens in this scenario. Instead, get this, They moved out of the way. I've been handicapped for like a decade and they NEVER move out of the way. I thanked them on the way past and they were really nice and pleasant.

So get this. I'm leaving and there is a dad and two young sons blocking the exit to the handicapped lot and he sees me and the other car with a lady in wheelchair in it start to pull out of our parking spots, and he puts his arms around his kids and They moved out of the way! Twice in one day, polite able bodied people instead of passive aggressive assholes.

Bonus points? The four year old was dressed as superman and the 1-2nd grader was wearing an Obama tee shirt. Seems about right.

* My brain just parsed an Angie's List commercial as offering a Handy Man and not a handyman. *ahem*

* Some of you will remember the state of the apartment when I moved in, the Pigmen having pissed pretty much everywhere and the disgustingly grubby state of everything. My toilet was the worst. I suspect it hadn't been cleaned properly since they erected the building. I've been working on it, as bit at a time, but I assumed the rust streaks were as permanent as the damaged enamel. I started experimenting with those things you toss in the tank at some point in 2016 on the grounds it really couldn't make it worse and I'm buying them in packs at the dollar store, so it's not like the two dollars I spent so far was a huge investment. I was skeptical. My family never used them, we just cleaned the toilet regularly, and i figured it was a scam, but seriously two dollars in six months. I did see some mild improvement with the first set, so I invested in the second dollar's worth, only switched brands. I popped it after dinner. By 2AM, there was noticeable marked improvement. Dude! Really, I need all new plumbing what with the past it's sell by water heater, the crap water pressure for hot water, the pipes, and the wobbly toilet that I rigged back together after it broke and keep having to mess with, but no way is any of that happening. Right now, I'll settle for as toilet that works and is reasonable presentable to guests.

* I have reached season 5 of Shameless (I'm only 2/3 through so do not TELL me the rest). I think this is the first year I really liked Lip as a person. I really have appreciated his season 4-5 college arc which has been very much about culture shock and how hard it is for first generation college students. I don't always agree with his season 5 decitions, but oh, do I understand them. I am also really apreciating the writers making both Kevin AND Veronica clearly in the wrong for their marital troubles. It would have been so much easier to make one the put upon hero and one the villain. Instead they did something realer and more complex.

As always though, it is the Mickey and Ian plot that absolutely breaks me. Ian's stuff is so hard to watch and heartbreaking. Noel Fisher's performance though? Dayumn. His character has come so far from the guy who could only say "I love you" by committing hate crimes against Ian's other lovers. Watching his season four struggle to start owning his truth was beautiful. This season though, ouch. The performance is so fucking good. The tiny hesitation and the brave little lift of the chin every time he tells a new stranger/authority figure that he and Ian are together, lovers, boyfriends. The absolute devastation on his face and the love that is so clearly there as Ian spirals. This story is so important to me. Mickey Milkovich is so important to me. The Ian/Mickey relationship is really important to me.

* Dylan Thomas' " “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” has been bouncing around a lot in my head in the last year and especially since November. I know, I know. He wrote it when his dad was dying and there is an argument as to whether it is an admonition to his dying Father (harsh) or a description. It was my Father's favorite poem and I was exposed to it young.

I've thought about it an aweful lot over the years, and to me it has always been an exhortation to the living in the face of the reality of death. I'm okay with being wrong about intent, because the author is dead, after all, both metaphorically and physically. This is what it means, what it always means to me, a call to resist, a call for life and light to stand against in inevitability of entropy. I have lived that way personally. I sucked every morsel of delight and grief the world offered me. I fought for every step. Even as the lights go out all over the West, I will not go gentle and I will always rage, rage against the dying of the light. Fuck the academics who tell me different.

* My credit card payment went through and so I headed out, coupon in hand to do some adulting. I save up hardware store run things until I have at the same time 1. A coupon. 2. 20-25 dollars worth of things needed for home and garden. I needed sluggo, fly strips, and good glue, and the coupon ends tomorrow, so out I went. I had to buy a small thing at check out extra to hit the minimum, so I tossed in a candy on top. As he was bagging them up I realized I had just "bought poison and candy!" The man said, "You are far from the first." so I am set with the basics for when the weather warms, which in my region is likely soonish. The bulbs are already quite leafy. I do need to do some cleaning and prep out there, but not today. Today I messed about with fish filters and changed out the fly strips. I need to do gluing, but also not today.

* I was describing Swan Lake to someone the other day. In the plot summary, I said something like, "And being a lunkhead, he doesn't notice the black swan is not his girlfriend, whom he supposedly loves." Today I was watching some Coppelia, and thinking, "Being a lunkhead, he decides to cheat on his lively and intelligent girlfriend with a manikin he saw in a window.... Are all ballet boyfriends idiots?”

* I finally got to see season three of Penny Dreadful. I have all sorts of problems with the North American section of the plot, none of which were the fault of the excellent actors, and I really didn't like much of anything about how the Vanessa plot ended, except for Dr. Seward and the glorious Cat. On paper one might think Vanessa's stuff would be triggering, but none of it was. I really enjoyed her acting and that of Mr. Claire and that episode with mostly just the two of them was well done, but I hated the end of the big arc plot so much it is hard to get past that.

For me, the best thing in the season was Lily's plot. for all the ways this show has been problematic, particularly around race and LGBT things, they did get this particular passage about rape culture and patriarchy pretty much right. How often have I had men try to tame me or edit out or cut out bits of me they didn't like or found inexplicable? So many men do that: try to turn the person they think they want into some version of them that has nothing to do with who they actually are? Victor Frankenstein's sense of entitlement to Lily, is belief that he owns her and his declaring her having agency, past, and desires that have nothing to do with him is so very male and very relevant and part of a long ugly history of straight white men medicalizing protest. It was a beautiful example of depiction without endorsement. Lily's resistance, her insistence that her scars are part of who she is... How often have I said and written that I wouldn't go back in time and change anything about my childhood, as horrible as it was, because I like myself and to do that would be suicide, since I literally have no clue who I'd me now, but for sure that person would be nothing like this one. Vanessa's resistance in the Banning clinic (the strongest part of her season three arc), and Lily's resistance in Bedlam, these moved me and are things so familiar I have no words for it really. So for all my anger at season two, and my disgust at how the season three A plot turned out, I loved season three because pieces of it were true and powerful and all to real.

* I was watching a Bolshoi Corsair with Masha Alexandrova and Nikolai Tsiskaridze. She is exquisite, but he was a disappointment. I kept trying to put my finger on what was wrong. He is sloppy and a tad selfish. I can spot mistakes, I can see him waiting his turn when he should be supporting her. It's not that he's awful, but he's just not in her league at all. Finally, I put my finger on it: She dances like she loves dancing; he dances like he loves people watching him dance.

* I am not sure I can be clearer than this. The Trump-Ryan plan to abolish ACA and Medicare and dramatically cut Medicaid is designed to literally kill people. * Wow, I have zero fucks to give about Alexandria except for Michonne. I also can't remember who half of them are/tell them apart. Too many generic white men, as if from a vat. Watching "Talking dead," I was thinking Lou Diamond Phillips is still terribly good looking after all these years, but he seems to radically underestimate the violence, danger, and determination of the female characters. He listed the dangerous people in the Alexandria group at start of season and left out Michonne, Maggie, and Rositia, all of whom are tougher, brighter, and angrier than Rick. Just saying. I do agree wit Mr. Phillips that this is the time for Carol style covert fight back clever instead of waving balls around sort of situation. That's what you do when you have few resources up against an overwhelming foe. You appear compliant and you plan and you bide your time. Being really smart about picking when and how to resist is everything in that sort of situation. The moment it's clear how bad it is, you give the impression you'd give in and only move when you know everything you can about the enemy and you've planned out everything. Never, ever move at the points they expect it. Lul them and move when they think you are broken. I figured this out at the age of eight. I doubt Rick is even close to clever enough to figure it out. Also, Ron Funches is adorable. Ron Funches is always adorable. I loved his bit towards the end where he talks about the "true strength in women" regarding Michonne and Rosita. "A lot of times as guys, we're very blustery, we're very like, 'I wanna fight,' but when the chips go down, we're like, 'No, never mind. We'll do what you say.' But ladies, they're like, 'Oh, what? a Dude in a leather jacket whistles at me that's a creep? I dealt with this before!'"

* So not only was I up at entirely the wrong time of morning for an extra Doctor appointment, but I had an extra adventurous drive with a car that kept stalling out as it was running on fumes. All to see the wrong Doctor, one who is not familiar with my multiple filing cabinets worth of medical history. So I'm shaved to the bone financially with a wait and see on my lungs. I came home, ate, then coughed 'til I threw up, and now can't get enough air. At least the window washers were hot men, one of whom was willing to pull our screens for the procedure instead of skipping us.

* Fear the Walking Dead: Look, I know it sounds stupid to quibble about unrealistic things in a zombie show, but there's a difference between asking me to accept one big premise (zombies) in an otherwise fairly realistic setting. It's another thing to throw in lots of little details that are not related to that big fictional premise which I know contradict reality. Skye's father had a yacht. Not one as big as the one in the show, but large enough. Those things are gas guzzlers. You need to refuel them, like, a lot. It's not like my soldier's dad's sailboat with a back up motor where you don't need that much fuel with friendly winds. With a boat like they have on the show you basically have to fuel up every day or two depending on how far and fast you are going, currents, and electricity use. Again, I don't know that model, but I haven't seen them fuel up or plug in when they were docked and they are meant to be going fast and pretty much constantly. I'm assuming this boat has way bigger fuel tanks, but it also clearly has a much larger motor. I've no clue the specs on a big yacht like that, but I've been worrying constantly about fuel every episode waiting for it to run low, and it bugs me that they didn't seem to fuel up in episode 2. Skye's dad fueled up every time they docked, just in case, because you are pretty much fucked if you run out of fuel on a large body of water like the Columbia or the Puget Sound, or all Deities help you on the Ocean. I rather assume this is what did the folks in on the Dawn of the Dead reboot. Run out of gas, you have options. Run out in the Ocean when there is no coast guard anymore to rescue you? *shudder* The fact that no one's even mentioned fuel nags at me constantly while watching it.

Similarly, what's up with Nick's addiction? Is Strand feeding him rationed pills off camera? Because otherwise, the fuck happened to his withdraw? I wish they'd clarify this, because I am constantly staring at nick when he's on screen and thinking about RL addicts I've known. Admittedly, I've never been there for acute withdraw, but I remember the way D's hands would shake her first week or two out of heroin detox back when we were both 15. (we used to play a lot of cards. Helped take her mind off it. I didn't use and was restful company back then, willing to listen and talk about anything, but not a use trigger, so I was a good person to be around for where she was right then). I remember how generally shaky various of by friends have been after we got them back from a bad one.

Look, I love character based ambiguity, and am cool with endings of books and movies that can be read more than one way, but with these real world details, I desperately need some disambiguation, because it's messing with my suspension of disbelief. I can suspend for zombies OR I can suspend for magically refilling fuel tanks OR I can suspend for some sort of weird withdraw situation, though the withdraw is actually harder to suspend for than the zombies, because no one is really pretending zombies aren't absurd. (Mutated rabies in a live host that burns the host out is less absurd. Walking Dead infectious zombies are in the realm of right out). So I really need to know what the fuel situation is and a shot explaining Nick's drug situation. I can see Strand having drugs on hand as I rather assumed his lack of sleep was cocaine related, but I shouldn't have to work to honey pot this when they could spend like thirty seconds showing us WTF.

I am also finding the characters frustrating. How hard is it to grasp at this point with previous near death experiences behind them, that wandering away from the group without saying where you are going is a bad idea? The ep.2 family TOLD them about noise. Do they have any survival instincts at all? At least Carl and Sophia had the excuse of ages in single digits, and I was impatient with it then. No one has an excuse like that here and the wait for the teens to get their heads out their asses is making me cranky.

* Today was forage, followed by library exchange and taxes. I probably should have yelled "Witness me!" I have a list of assorted small bureaucracy, one involving at minimum a frustrating trip down town, but I'm going to try to do that stuff next week. Tomorrow Tibicina and her gentleman friend are visiting. Friday I've a scheduled online thing and I'll need rest anyway.

* Note to people paying taxes: you need your proof of insurance coverage!

* Note to US Citizens over 18. Voting season has started. Where I live, we got a tax levy ballot over the weekend and I sent mine in Monday. Iowa caucuses are next week and primaries continue from there. If you live in a caucus state it is important to go in person as that is the only way to be counted in the Presidential primary. You know what else is important? Voting on other races and ballot measures. Please, please, please do not forget to vote on State and local races. School board elections matter, city council elections matter, sometimes sheriff election can dramatically change how livable your city or town are. State elections can determine things like will you still have unions or will birth control be legal. Seriously, this stuff matters. If you don't know your candidates look them up on line. Do I know the name of my county treasurer without checking? No, but I have access to google. yes, it's less convenient to do this if you aren't in a write in state, but those voter guides they mail you can be a real help for finding the candidates relative to your district. 10-15 minutes of research are worth it. Trust me.

Also, because it is possible to be politically active and still not know this because it's not advertised at all: Washington State is a caucus state. No really. Everything else is mail in, and they list the Presidential candidates on the ballot, but if you want your vote to count in the presidential primary, you need to schlep in to your local caucus. Send the ballot in anyway, as generally there are congress critters, mayors and the like on there, but go to the caucus. Yes, it's a pain in the ass and if you want parking, go early, but do go. If you are caucusing in Washington state, you can pick to go to the Republican or the Democratic caucus, but not both. You don't have to decide until the day. My experience is they hold the Republicans in the morning and Democrats in the afternoon in the same location, usually wherever you used to in person vote before they abolished that.

* There have been serious protests in Iran in front of the Saudi Embassy that ended in them storming the building and setting fire to it in response to Saudi Arabia executing a prominent Shia cleric and 46 others. Forty people have been arrested. There are no reported fatalities. The Saudis are saying it was about the War on terror. The religious leadership and Revolutionary guard and flinging fiery rhetoric. The Iranian president had a more tempered response calling the executions a human rights abuse, while also condemning the Embassy attack. Tensions are already high because of... everything, really, and none of this is helping.

* Yesterday I had scheduled rp. My Mal tormented Lady Hellan y making sure she didn't fall off a parapet while impared then followed her around being nice to her. *shudder* I had a productive pick up scene where my Dhrae went and was nice to the guy who attacked him at his stag party while the man was recovery from wounds until the guy burst into tears. Look, I'm really evil. I know that. I also broke down Halloweentown and did a bunch of necessary grown up things.

Today I was slow starting due to low spoons and hector wanting to sit on his human. The little guy hasn't a lot of time left so I try to let him get all the cuddling he wants. When I went out to the time traveling book drop, it was not only snowing, but sticking a little, so I picked up some provisions while I was out in case there is ice tomorrow and I can't leave my house. I ended up spending more than I should as the vegetarian mince meat is seasonal and this is the only place I've found it around here, so best to stock up. This makes food budget tight as I also need to order emergency soup as I'm down to one can. (Wolfgang Puck Old Fashioned Potato is the one brand and flavour of canned soup I actually like. It is not too salty, but is vegetarian, filling, neither a tomato or a thick cream, as tomato is too acidic when I'm sick and I strictly ration dairy so as not to drive up chlorestorel further than my meds already do, but the small amount of dairy in it is safe. It tastes fine if I add a little pepper. I don't know why all the local stores stopped carrying the one flavour of canned soup that is perfect, but they did, so I have to order it by the flat. This is cheaper than the separate cans would be, but a serious investment requiring payment up front). So I really need to go down and order the soup from the store that does that before I buy protein or other staples. Sigh. Anyway, I brought down the small haloween tree today and did dishes. While I did dishes hector rode around on me yelling in my ear. He had food so i was not sure what the issue was, until I went to sit down. Turned out he wanted me to go sit in my office chair so he could press up against my leg for pre-nap pettins, poor Beastie. I still need to break down the big Halloween Tree, pack up the lighting, and mend all the broken things before closing up the boxes, but the end is in sight.

Why is emergency soup a big deal? It is one of the few foods I can make that is both warm and can be made in less than five minutes. Sometimes, that is all the leg I have left. I also have emergency granola bars for when I need meds right now and can't handle making anything. This is a disability issue. I keep a stock of emergency foods not because I am lazy, but because sometimes it is quick food or no food and no meds that must be taken with food. A large portion of my can stand up time most days is taken up with cooking and housework. I do a lot of food prep that involves things like chopping vegetables. Sometimes I can do a long food prep, do dishes while things cook, then make a salad and finish the meal. Sometimes the trip from chair to bathroom requires a great deal of effort and planning. This is how a body like mine works. Just because I can do a thing one day doesn't mean I can the next. It often means I absolutely can't the next, actually. Picking what to make involves figuring out not only what I want to eat, but what I can handle making.

I mention this as there's been another little wave of mocking the accessibility products on TV, and another wave of people policing other people's disabilities. It does not help that they show able bodied people using the products, though I get that getting able bodied people to use them makes them more affordable. The problem is, it also reinforces ideas like the special spaghetti fork being about laziness and not MS or CP or Arthritis or Parkinson's or paraplegia, etc.. The thing is, I think we all have a little internalized ableism. I know I catch myself now and then. So it's good to remind ourselves that other people with other challenges exist, and a little empathy and imagination and listening are good things to apply.

I was enough better today to do necessary things (Library drop, two bureaucracies, Squirrel’s meds, post office). It was super important I finished the bureaucracy today, as I haven’t time tomorrow. The next bureaucracy leg is in a week and a half and scheduled so I can plan for it.

* I got black and purple striped fingerless gloves for Gothmas!

* So here's the thing with my mobility. I mostly don't use the crutches in my apartment. I do use one or both on a bad mobility day, but my floor is flat and I don't allow obstructions. I have things I can lean on or grab onto in if my legs lose power briefly. I go barefoot without socks, so I'm not going to slip. I have the crutches or the wheelchair as an option if the pain renders the legs too painful or prone to failing, but mostly, I'm okay. I often don't bother when I'm visiting someone else's place if there are no stairs or obstructions or small children running about. I pick a spot and sit in it, and if I need to move, I quickly find a place to sit. I do hang on to the crutch if it's a large party, as I'm more likely to need it for safety or getting around complicated moving clumps of people.

When I'm outside (curbs, stairs, uneven pavement, random obstructions), I always have at least a crutch, becaue even if I have above average standing leg control, I fall really easily. I absolutely use it inside places like shops or the library, where small unattended children or adult assholes can run into me and knock me down, or places like the post office, where I may have to stand in long lines, which is incredibly painful and burns my steps for the day.

Foraging is the worst of all worlds. You get up to a couple hours of line, most of it with nowhere to sit if I couldn't park close enough for a chair. I often end up sitting on cold wet pavement in the rain if the parking is bad. There are often people smoking in or next to the line, which my scarred up slowly degenerating lungs can't handle which means I may not be able to breathe well and start trying to cough up a lung, smokers generally being to lazy and inconsiderate to move a safe distance away. (I'm not coughing to be an asshole, Smokers. I am coughing because I have a genetic condition that will likely eventually kill me. I'm not the asshole in this situation.) Add to this, that inside is a chaotic environment where people and small minimally supervised children randomly run into you.

So as when I go shopping, I put the crutch in the cart and use the cart as a walker. For the time I'm there, just as at the supermarket, that cart is a mobility devise. The way you can tell is there is a crutch sticking out of the cart. Being me, I try not to be in the way. I do keep the cart really close because I do not like being separated from my crutch in public places, even though often, the thing I'm going to grab if my legs randomly give out or someone knocks into me is likely a counter, a bin, a bit of shelving. When I am public, that crutch is basically an extra, more reliable leg. Yes, even when I'm not using it, because I worry about getting stranded, which was a thing that used to happen towards the end of my teaching career and is a thing that can happen in a chaotic warehouse type environment if you pull my cart and thus crutch away out of reach while I'm grabbing oranges.

So when the man grabbed my cart and pulled it away, I instinctively pulled it back to my hip without turning around. People bump your cart all the time, so I do this all the time without thinking about it because that's my legs and I need them approximate to my hips. Only it wasn't someone carelessly bumping my cart, it was a guy who worked there taking the cart over to where they want able bodied people to put them for the bread section so they are out of the way. Normally they wait until you are ready to enter breads, at which time I say, "I'm using it as a walker," and everything is fine. The guy had jumped the gun. A small tug of war ensued with him talking over me, "I'm just moving it out of the way. I'm not stealing your stuff. You can let go of it. It will be fine over here," and me in my startlement trying to get my phrase out in the gaps about it being a walker. I could see the moment he finally figured out what he was doing (stealing someone's leg). I could tell they'd had sensitivity training for disabilities, as he apologized mentioning he hadn't seen the crutch in a way that suggested he really did get it. I wasn't angry or anything and it was all good.

I am mentioning it because this is a thing that happens. You are sitting somewhere and someone "helps" by moving your crutch somewhere further away. I want to go to the bathroom, and it's gone. Which is alarming. I wouldn't be sitting with it if I didn't need it. I try to prop or tuck it out of the way, but depending on the set up, sometimes it needs moving. It's totally fine to ask me to move the thing. I will happily move the thing, but if you move it for me? I may not know where it is when I needed it, and it's disconcerting. That crutch (or cane or wheelchair) may not be quite as intimate as a prosthesis, but it's still functionally a leg or legs and it is freaky to discover someone's trying to walk off with one of your legs, or worse yet taken it and hidden it, or worse still as happens to wheelchair users all too often, stolen by some asshole able bodied person because they've decided that that person doesn't need it because they had to pee or whatever and left it unattended a few moments.

My little tug of war yesterday was not a big deal, but I thought it would be a good time to remind people to ask before you move a mobility devise. Use your words, or at least a polite gesture and let the person move it themselves. Keep in mind that it's not always obvious that you are looking at a mobility devise. When we took my Gran shopping, I'd go grab her a cart and bring it to the car, so she didn't need to get her walker out. Her being past 90 and not liking to let go the cart was a hint, but a fairly subtle one. Keep in mind that just because someone is not using a mobility devise right this second, doesn't mean they don't really need it. There are all sorts of reasons someone might not be in their chair. They may be able to stand and walk short distances, but have very little safe mobility. (Being able to walk the distance to use a non-wheelchair accessible rest room, doesn't mean they can safely walk to their car.) They may have a condition where every step is agony, but the office or person they need to visit is not wheelchair accessible. They might have crawled off to sit on the grass in the park, which is something wheelchairs are not good at. Those things are expensive. Stealing them is not cool or clever or teaching that person a lesson. It's a serious theft that they may not be able to afford to replace and you could strand someone. DON'T DO IT. If you see any mobility devise? Leave it alone unless you have permission to move it.

Yes, accidents happen, like the thing with my cart and crutch the other day, and if you make a mistake like that, apologize and try to be more careful. That's all I ask.

* So as you may or may not remember, Misha is my real legal middle name, being a name used by both men and women. (My first name is also used by both men and women, but I never liked or identified with it at all. For a variety of reasons, keeping my legal signature was way less hassle, but I prefer people not use my legal first name.) Gwydion is my use name, which my friends use and have been using for a really long time. Seriously, if you are using Gwydion feel free to keep using it. I like it for a bunch of reasons. However, there are a bunch of contexts where using the Misha part of my legal name makes more sense instead of using my use name. Sometimes the long explanations involved are more effort than needs to happen for certain transactions and there are people outside of my sub-cultures who do not get the use name thing at all and it becomes this big drama. So in circumstances where it's apt to be major drama, I'm using Misha. You are welcome to call me either, and please, please don't correct folks for using either Gwydion or Misha( or Nec or NecHocNecIllud the last two are common social media handles for me). You are welcome to correct them for using my legal first name, because that is really just for banks and creditors, and I was well into my teens before I started answering to it semi-regularly and I frequently forget it is meant to refer to me. I've been going by use names pretty much my whole adult life. Feel free to keep using the use name. Feel free to switch to Misha if you are uncomfortable with use names or whatever. I just mention the Misha thing as it's come up enough in the last year, and the last month in particular, that an announcement is in order to avoid confusion.

* You may be wondering: whatever happened to Archaeology round up? A year ago, I ran a massive October long event on Game of Bones. It was so time consuming, I fell massively behind on everything Internetty. I did try to do archaeology round up periodically and gave up... I'm thinking last Spring? The links I post are the tip of the iceberg as far as the reading involved in keeping up with the archaeology press. Today I finally mostly caught up. O.o I still owe two Black Sails rewatch thingies. I also owe y'all about 2/3rds of a year of archaeology. Of course a lot of stuff in my "to read when I catch up" stash is gone by now, but I've hopes of starting to post catch up links soon. Tomorrow I have a party to go to and I absolutely can't promise dates on Black Sails or Archaeology Round up, but they are firmly on the to do list. If I am stubborn enough to spend a literal year catching up on my Internet reading, trust me, the other stuff will happen.

* So Hector is not doing too well. He's not quite as scary emaciated as last week when I thought he was dying in the immanent sense, but he's Disheveled and scary frail and having trouble making basic jumps. I keep checking him when he's asleep to make sure he's still breathing. He's doing that long fade elderly cats do. Last year he pulled out of it and there is always a chance he will again, but I'm not all that sanguine he will this time, so I'm giving him all the cuddles as this could easily be his last winter.

* Donald Trump's tax plan is a 21.6% tax cut for the 1%, including himself, at the cost to the country of 12 trillions dollars. After all, the top 10% only have 76% of the country's wealth, not all of it, and while we have a record high wealth inequality the economy is still vaguely functional, so the best thing to do is radically redistribute even more money upwards, further robbing the social safety net, infrastructure, investments in our future, and anything that helps anyone except the 1% who contribute the least.

* I can not tell if the most recent episode of Dusk 'til Dawn was incoherent or that I just couldn't manage to pay attention enough to follow it. (A cross between Robin Hood and Return of Martin Guerre). It’s just so sloooow and watching it is a chore and I have trouble telling the characters apart.

* Addendum: I read the Fangs Dusk 'til Dawn summary tonight and I'm pretty sure it's a case of the show not making sense and me being bored enough that I wander off to do other things and miss chunks of info dump which inherently do not make sense.
