* Current car estimate is $530.00. It's too late to say no even if we could manage without a car as the mechanic is always super short on space and getting them to keep it until we can get it out of hock Friday too a lot of persuading. Squirrel thinks his pay check will cover it, but it means we are going to be two month's late on our electric bill, which we had to float to make the June Car repairs. (He's also going to lose his phone).

This is a real emergency. We lose electric we are fucked, especially in this heat in the middle of allergy season when my lung meds (requiring electricity) are pretty much all that keep me upright. Anything people can send will help, as offering electric a partial payment is better than nothing.

* So I'm trying a Wonder Woman rewatch. Keep in mind that I saw them first in real time when they were brand new, to the point that I remember all the little girls twirling on the playground, singing Wonder Woman and pretending to transform. These were so important when I was a kid, in an era when boys liked to pretend only white boys were allowed to be superheroes and everyone else had to be villains or damsels to rescue. Diana had a job and was a superhero too. It was incredibly important and exciting to see her on TV I watched them in syndication into the '80's, but I likely haven't seen them since...I'm guessing 83? '84? The pilot rather cheesy by modern tastes, I fear, and the dialog is rather wooden. You can see the direct line from the Adam West Batman to here, though this isn't that kind of funny. Oddly enough, I had forgotten it was meant to be WWII and they were fighting NAZIs, this despite me clearly remembering everything else about the plot of the pilot. It is just so very seventies in look and feel and content, that I kept forgetting watching it that this is supposed to be the '40's. I am not impressed with the male sidekick, who is no where near her caliber, and I have other qualms. It has not aged as well as one would hope, but it was actually watcheable unlike Green Hornet, and I've hopes of it smoothing out a little next episode. I just... It's hard to separate the reality from how incredibly important it was to a generation of little girls.

* Health Update: I'm about half as sick as I was this time last week, which is a more functional thing. The steroids did way cut down the amount of gunk in my lungs, though I'm also clearly still infected with something. I am really struggling with things like food, though there is no real way to tell if it is the infection, the steroid's after effects, or the ravages of antibiotics. The Doctor prescribed a new long term lung treatment, but I'd already spent two hours at the Doctor and the pharmacy's usually overwhelmed that close to close. I also forgot to check if any money had cleared before I left. I've called a few more things in and will go pick up the mess another day. I am still heavily medicated even by my standards and the infection leaves me exhausted.

There were no tomato or basil starts when I went to the co-op and it turns out I can't even order a gravy flat as I'd planned to as the distributor wasn't even selling them. Sigh. I did get dried mushrooms there and emergency perishables on the way home, but my dream of tzaziki and naan will have to await another mission on another day. I do have a nice set of greens planted outside and have radically reorganized to take best advantage of the sun. My choice to leave the perennial herbs up high on the shelving has proved an excellent idea as the sage and sorrel are thriving and quite happy to poke up through the bars. I'm being liberal with the sluggo even though I haven't seen slugs yet as they are brutal with young greens, and I have a lot of fragile volunteers seeded out of last years crop. Let us hop we get tomatoes and carrot too, as last year was a bit of a disappointment in the carrot green department.

* I love that the late breakfast genre of still life painting was actually a thing.

Next time you see someone mocking a woman for posting pictures of her breakfast, take a moment to imagine the time and energy men used to spend painting picture of theirs.

* Black Sails XXXVIII: Orpheus and Eurydice and Ambiguous Oracles.

I have a lot of feelings about this one. I'm normally a fan of ambiguity and unreliable narration, but in this instance I am left with a fury so deep I'm not sure what to do with it. For the record, I am agnostic on the Schrodinger's Cat situation. I leaned one way after first watching; I lean another way after deep analysis, wavered back and forth, but I am not really convinced either way and honestly wish they had not left us all with this mess. I will explain my reasons and thinking in the analysis, but I suspect I will not leave anyone happy. I know I'm not, but I do feel better having chewed it over at length. I do mean at length. Edited to add: I am leaning towards team live cat after the edit at the bottom and literally more than half a day writing about it.

Side note: Can we please have this cast in all the things? There are so many incredibly skilled actors here. I know Mcgowen and Stephens have particularly strong careers, but can we please put the rest of them, particularly Ms. Kennedy and Toby Schmitz in lots of projects, but really all of them in everything?

Cut for length: )

* I know it's unreasonable to complain about two months of sick. After all, I'm nowhere near as bad off as I was with that half year MRSA infection last year, but this pair of pathogens has been exhausting and debilitating. The fever and Hector won't let me get proper sleep and I'm exhausted all the time. I drag myself out of bed to do necessary things and crash hard and suddenly with barely enough warning to brush teeth, take meds, etc.. The nausea is so strong even the cocktail of anti-nausea meds I'm on don't solve it. My brain is endlessly fogged, which I hate. Periodically it's like someone stuck an ice pick through my head, and I can't smell well, which makes it hard to eat or deal with people. There doesn't seem to be any end in sight. Gah! Last sleep was all fever bright escapes from the east coa, taxes, and strange fish in between the sweats and the howling. Everything I eat or drink tastes of ashes and mucus. I need a week off, but there is no week off from this sort of thing.

* This isn't quite right. There isn't just one Philly accent any more than there is one New york accent. My accent isn't the same as the South Philly accent they are talking about, thought we share the extra vowels I once spent a fascinating few minutes teaching my linguistic professor. (Me: "No, that's New york. There's a subtle, but crucial difference." He picked it up surprisingly quickly. A lot of people out here can't really hear the difference). The accents of Philly aren't just geographical, but class based, and to a certain extent tied to race and ethnicity. People from different countries tended to settle in neighborhoods with other people from there. That was breaking down by the time I was born, but as with places like New York and New Orleans, with similar histories, certain neighborhoods developed accent variations that reflected the immigrant's accents, and while the lines shift and blur as people move around, an educated ear can tell that a person grew up in an area with a lot of yiddish, or Italian, or Irish, or southerners who came North after slavery, etc. even if the person is not from the group or groups that influenced the particular flavor of Philly speak. Still, this article is interesting. "The Sound of Philadelphia Fades Out:" http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/02/opinion/sunday/the-sound-of-philadelphia-fades-out.html?_r=0

* All attempts to get a proper sleep before the trip to Mount Vernon failed. Mapquest lied as to the position of the hospital, but my guess that they meant left instead of right was correct, so we were not late. The procedure itself was short, but there are hours of observation afterwards, so it still took all morning. It didn't solve his heart thing, so they are switching his meds and we do it again in a month. The next attempt really needs to work as the thing they try after that is incredibly dangerous, instead of being the not a big deal thing they did today. We went out to breakfast, as he had to fast for the procedure and the only vegetarian thing they had at the coffee shop at the hospital was a nasty greasy pasta salad. (They usually had tasty sounding sandwiches, but they didn't come in the morning delivery.) I can recommend the shockingly good chai, however. So short version, Squirrel needs a couple days rest, but is no worse nor better than he was before.

At this point, all I wanted was to sleep in an uninterrupted segment longer than fifteen minutes, but I dropped Squirrel home, and went to get blood work that needed to happen before tomorrow. It turned out they had not been billing insurance properly, so I spent another half hour waiting in lines and getting things straightened out with the lab and my primary provider. Alas, this took so long I couldn't do the same for the pharmacy as they were out top lunch, and given the impressive pain level and the exhaustion standing in the rain for twenty minutes did not appeal. I picked up my research at the library and went home. There were cat messes and people kept phoning me, but I did get a few hours sleep.

Obviously, I'm getting fuck all done tonight.

* Re: The Academy Awards. The Average age of an Academy voter is 67 and they are overwhelmingly white male, which explains a whole lot about how unrepresentative the Oscars are. Insiders were predicting Gravity getting almost everything as the old white men really liked it, even though they knew they should vote for 12 Years a Slave. I was expecting to be furious this morning. Instead I'm just miffed. I'd have rather they got Best Actor (No offense to Mr. McConaughey, who was excellent and my second choice) and Director, but if they were only to get two major awards, I'm okay with it being best film and Best Supporting Actress, plus best adapted screenplay. (They should have gotten cinematography too, but weren't even nominated, despite how brilliantly shot this film was.)

* This all lead me indirectly to fall into the past Academy Award Documentary hole, which is always disappointing. I found a movie I desperately want to see (14-18) which does not exist on DvD, and a collection of other things I wanted to to see, but also don't exist, a few I could order through the library, and a bunch I clearly should go back and see when I have more emotional energy. I made it to the early '80's this time.

* Just a reminder that while most of us are really angry at Putin and the Russian government, the Russians living here in the states are not the enemy. They left Russia for a reason. They chose to live here and are not in anyway responsible for the state encouraged violence over there. The "Russians" running the little shop near where you live might not even be Russian. If you live in my part of the country, most of the people US born people assume are Russian are Ukrainians who experienced extremely brutal religious oppression under the Soviets on top of all the pretty horrible things inflicted on citizens of the Ukraine under the Soviets. (Google "Stalin" and "Ukraine)." They are here because they are terrified a change of government will have them literally starving to death, rounded up to be sent to camps, or shot. It is a realistic fear, because the old people in particular had all those things happen to friends and family. They are not the enemy; they are refugees. Yes, they speak Russian, because they had to learn it and many are tri or quatra-lingual, but they are not Russian. It is unfair and out right appalling to target boycotts or worse yet hate speech or hate crimes at people who were oppressed by or are actively fleeing Putin's cruelty and oppression (as is the case with a recent flood of LGBT refugees and their families in some parts of the country).

Please, folks, let's try to be decent to each other, okay?

* I see Republicans are claiming that Republicans forcing the sequester because they like to pretend the imaginary debt crisis is real is somehow the President's fault. They are also claiming that cutting back military spending even a little is unprecedented even though we always have dramatically cut back military spending after every single previous war except Iraq II. Why let reality get in the way of rhetoric, after all? I see they are demanding we starve military families by taking away their EBT/SNAP food stamps so as to use that money to keep us on a War footing so they can randomly invade more countries as they've been demanding for well over a decade. They insist that starving the children of active duty soldiers is "supporting the troops" while feeding their children is bad for America. Riiiiight.

The financial meeting involved me reading for an hour at the notaries desk with small flurries of trying to find key data on paperwork, confirming things verbally and signing things. Which means we still can't sign our lease as we don't know if we can afford to live here. Which means I still can't do my trip to San Fransisco for my little surgery. I am being haunted by "Bring him Home" the last few days. Their relationship was in it's last month; I would date him a few months later. The image of her tears for her dead soldier brother who I never met and my soldier who would die too young twine together with the lyrics always, always.

* Seven hundred and fifty thousand people are losing their jobs as part of the republican victory over the economy. They want to remind you that they couldn't compromise, since the sequester gives them 98% of what they want. The only agreement they would take would be one that gave them a hundred present. They want to remind you that the sequester is the president's fault for giving in to Republican demands when they threatened to destroy the full faith and credit of the United States. He could easily have chosen to let them destroy the economy for a generation or more rather than give in. The Republicans want to remind you that the huge damage the sequester is going to do to ordinary people was worth it to prevent the rich from paying even a penny more into the system that serves them so well. Republicans are cheering tonight for their political victory over the president and the massive human misery and damage to the economy is worth nothing next to their point scoring. * Mitt Romney wants to remind you how much better off the east Coast would be right now if instead of the Federal government evacuating all those people a coordinated disaster response before and after Sandy, if we just left that up to private business. I mean sure, there's no profit in generously shipping the poor to shelters, rescuing the stranded, or rebuilding all the destroyed infrastructure (without a government contract) for a private business, but he insists we should privatize disaster response or at least return it to the States. I mean, the states are closing libraries and firing teachers for lack of funds, but surely they can coordinate multiple state disaster recovery all by themselves, right? I mean doing it less efficiently and maybe not doing it at all is way better than actually saving lives, draining and rebuilding the subway system, and helping the people who lost everything. I mean, which would you rather have, FEMA and the National Weather Service, or even more tax cuts for the super rich?

* BTW, the Romney/Ryan budget's planned cut of 40% the FEMA budget would pretty much make it impossible to respond to disasters like this.

* Mitt Romney decides to do the opposite of helping because a photo op of pretending to help disaster victims is more valuable than actually helping to his campaign. After all, looking like you give a shit about other people is way better than actually giving a shit about them.

In other words, I completely agree with the folks at Snopes on this one. BTW, when food stamps were actual paper money type coupons, they gave you change to the nearest dollar and the rest came back in smaller denomination stamps. * Last night, I transferred oils to the pretty new cigar box. (It's a food scent expansion box. In the last year I've also branched off a leather box from the man scent box.). Tonight I hung the new decorations. My complex still remains Halloween free as far as I can tell. I haven't checked all the building, but none of the ones I see regularly have decorated. This makes me sad. The frat boy type from upstairs borrowing our laundry room gave me such a Look when he caught me pinning up a new skeleton next to our zombie shelter sign. I get it, most college students consider Halloween an excuse to drink and dress skimpy, but in my house, Halloween was always serious business, and I carry on the tradition as best I can. I can't equal my father's realistic ghoul costume and real liver to terrify the neighborhood, but I decorate for serious, and on the night feed my dead and all comers. if I were rich, I'd be the person with the animatronic zombie and a cemetery yard. I can't do that, but every year, I replace the lights that broke with new, and add a few new decorations when I can afford them. I am hoping when the rainy season ends for Greenwick to help me rearrange and sort the storage unit, as half my Halloween stuff got buried by accident when I switched units, and I'd love to add that stuff back in.

* They woke me up to poll me again today. It was no surprise at all that half the poll was for our governor's race as it's very hot. The other half was a Senate race. I had never heard of the Republican candidate, but I am quite fond of my senators, so it wasn't hard to choose there. Most of the poll was questions checking my awareness and aproval of the four candidates positions on things like women' rights and economic policy. To my amusement, one of the questions included a tag line from one of the political ads, which was the only clear give away I could spot as to the source of the poll. I guess the Democrats in my state are way more subtle than the Republicans, who go for blatant push polls. This poll was more a reminder of the key issues up for grabs this election and done in such a way that it didn't feel particularly biased and was more encouragement to go look up the records for oneself.

* It turns out we have gotten partisan vote guides from most major parties, it's just that Squirrel mistook the Republican one for an advert when he brought in the mail that day, while I was the one who brought in the mail the day the Democrats arrived. My names on the list, and I get calls now and then, but as I've never managed to drag my gimpy ass to a Republican caucus not sent them money, I'm low priority, so get mostly proforma mailers and get out the vote calls, while as I have caucused for Democrats, I get lots of robo calls from them and way more come to our event/send us money calls.
